Originally built and owned by BH Proprietary Company, the hall was handed over the Whyalla Citizens Band (WCB) at a small ceremony on Friday July 3rd 1938 with a gold key given as souvenir of the occasion.

In March 2013, some eighty nine years after the first recorded information on the band, the remaining members of the Whyalla Citizens Band, elected to wind up their organisation, due to an inability to attract new members.

At the request of the Whyalla Citizens Band, representatives from the Whyalla Music Association assisted in finalising their affairs.

In December 2013, Whyalla Music Association in conjunction with the Whyalla City Council hosted a family fun day to remember and celebrate the achievements of and contribution to the Whyalla Community by the Whyalla Citizens Band.

During the event performers from Musicians Initiative, some established Whyalla musicians and the Whyalla Citizens Band performed to the public.

Speeches were made by Mayor Jim Pollock, Chairman of the Whyalla Musicians Association Inc Mr Ron Hay and President of the Whyalla Citizens Band, Mr Graham Watson, who also presented a cheque to the value of $14,500 to Whyalla Aged Care Incorporated.

The remaining members of the WCB, were each presented with a certificate to acknowledge time and dedication.

During the event it was announced that Whyalla Music Association Inc was in negotiations with the Whyalla City Council to lease the Band Hall and call it ‘home’.

Potential projects for the Band Hall facility include (but are not limited to) are:-

  • A local music museum with static and state of the art multimedia displays,

  • A venue to hold music and industry related workshops and small events,

  • A meeting place,

  • A rehearsal space,

A recording studio.

Whyalla Music Association took over the hall officially on October 2014 and have been busy since gettingthe facility usable.

As with any potential projects, the securing of funding to enable these to take place will be a task that the Whyalla Music Association committee will be work vigorously at, to realise the organizations vision.

Today the band hall is fully functional, with state of the art technology production equipment and a range of instruments, making it a walk in and play facility for the Whyalla Music Community.
